Training you new puppy

It's amazing what your dog can do when only given the opportunity.  Most dogs really do want to be "good boys" or "good girls".  They only tear everything apart and become "bad" out of frustration.  Main reason for this is you are not communicating with your dog in their language.

What is their language you ask?

I talk to my dog in English and for the most part they listen.  Whatever language you speak, they will listen, if they understand what you are asking of them.

My husband always makes the comment how our dogs know every word in the English language but just can't speak a word of it.  I think there is a lot to be said about this statement.

Dogs get confused when things aren't clear.  I recommend using one new word each week.  Get the dog use to it.  Get your dog understanding the meaning.  And always, ALWAYS be extremely clear.

An example --

Let's say this week you choose the word SIT.  All week long, you work on the meaning of sit.  You say sit and you gently push their butt down with your hand.  Then you say "good boy" or "good girl".  Add a treat (I like to use pieces of cheese (real WI cheese).  Just don't go overboard with the cheese, but a few pieces to work with them to train is great!

Don't make the mistake of saying "SIT DOWN".

Do you want them to SIT or do you want them to lay DOWN?  See the confusion.

I said we were working on ONE WORD each week.  Don't confuse the puppy.  Be extremely clear.  Also be patient.  Give them a chance to do what you are asking of them.  Take a deep breathe and give them and yourself a moment.  They are very smart.  They might need a breather to get their anxiety lower and then they will do what you say.

This starts becoming a game with them and they will really enjoy learning something new each week.  Learn something new each week and refresh their memory with the words they've already learned.

Think about how well your dogs will be doing within a year.  52 NEW
WORDS!!!

Examples of words to start off with:

SIT
WAIT
DOWN
SHAKE
HEEL
COME
STAY
